Graphic Design Terms You Should Know About
The graphic design world can be a tough place to live in for a newbie. Certain words and terms get thrown around without any clarification, leaving you to wonder what exactly they mean.
That’s why we’ve created this handy guide to 50 of the most common graphic design terms out there.
Ladies and gentlemen, shall we?
1. Rule of Thirds
Rule of Thirds is a technique in which you divide your image using two vertical and two horizontal lines. These lines intersect at four points, called focal points, which will be the main focus of your design.
2. Brand
A brand is a collection of concepts, ideas, and emotions that encapsulate your company’s values and ethos. It is a mix of all the fine conceptual details that make up the company, from the content it promotes to the way employees talk to the words used to uphold its values.
3. Brand Identity
A brand is the visual representation of a company. This can include things like logos, business cards, uniforms, letterheads, etc.
4. Brandmark
A type of logo design where a symbol is used in place of the company name, i.e. the Apple logo. Brandmarks are commonly accompanied by a logotype, but not always.
5. Grid
A grid is a framework made up of columns and rows. Grids help designers to arrange elements in a neat way, align them, and make the website more professional.
6. White space
White space also called negative space. It refers to the blank areas of a design that are not filled with content. White space helps designs “breathe”, avoids overly complicated designs, and keeps designs looking clean.
7. Lorem Ipsum
Lorem ipsum is a filler text that designers use as placeholders for real content. It’s used when the real copy isn’t ready and can be inserted in templates or mockups to show what the layout will look like once the real text has been added.
8. Typography
The term typography is derived from the Greek words “typos” and “graphein” meaning to write. It refers to the creative arrangement of type in a readable and visually appealing way. Typography usually concerns the design and use of various typefaces in a way that helps to better visually communicate ideas.
9. Body Copy
The main part of your design or publication — the written website content, the book contents, even this type you’re reading right now, it’s all body copy.
10. Hierarchy
The visual arrangement of design elements in a way that signifies importance. For example, you could make a title big and bold to ensure it attracts more attention than a small, lightly colored image caption.
There you have it, a quick rundown of some of the more common terms you might encounter when working with (or as) a graphic designer.
